When Maria started seventh grade she had no interest in math. It bored her. She felt it didn’t apply to what was important in her life. Like so many kids her age, she didn’t realize that math could help her better understand the world. Thanks to the generosity of donors like you, we helped Maria see her place in the world differently.
Because of us, Maria studied math in the context of issues that she cared about. She learned to use math to analyze, think critically and seek solutions for the most pressing global issues of her time. Maria’s excitement grew. She used ratios and proportions to understand relationships between population and poverty. She wrote persuasive essays using math to back her claims. Not only did her math improve, but she began to understand how to develop solutions to the problems in her community and her world.
Did you know that middle school is regarded as the last chance for instilling confidence and building competence in math? In fact, 65% of US middle school students leave 8th grade without proficiency in math. While MathAction is focused on math literacy for all young people, if students don’t do well by middle school, they are locked out of advanced math courses and cannot choose a STEM career in college.
After years of proven success in the classroom with our inquiry-based curriculum that uses math to make sense of the world, we’re excited to pilot an after-school program for middle schools. With your help, more students like Maria will foster their interest in math at this critical point in their academic path.
Help us reach our goal of $10,000 to fund the MathAction Afterschool Academy. With your gift of $500, we’ll train a team of MathAction educators to engage students in math through social and global challenges. Donate online today.
We are grateful to you for helping students like Maria transform their enthusiasm for math and for empowering students to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills. With your gift, we’re closing the gap between math literacy and real-world application by providing context for students on how math informs their lives.
With deep gratitude,
Founder and President of MathAction
P.S. Young people are the decision makers of the future. As our world grows more complex and the stakes continue to rise, we must act now to nurture critical thinking while we have the chance. A generous donor pledged to match all donations up to $3000, but only until December 31st! Act now by donating $500 or $100 to double your impact. Your gift helps kids use math to understand the world around them.
