…it’s broken now. In the paper today, I read a story about the second line from the previous post. The second line was such an extraordinary and moving experience for me and I learned today that just 5 blocks from where I parted ways with the parade, a two-year-old boy was shot and killed by stray gunfire. You can read the full story from the Times Picayune here. Every time I come to this city I feel a perceptible and never ending conflict between celebration and catastrophe. I bear witness to incredible resilience in the face of repeated disaster and tragedy. I am humbled, moved, saddened, teary-eyed and angry and yet always ultimately inspired by the residents of these communities.
